Zouaves de Afrique |
Details |
Modeled after the elite Algerian troops and then copied by the French, the American Civil War was the first time the Zouave soldier fought in the Union Army. On August 17, 1861, Colonel Charles H. T. Collis (then Captain) led an independent company of soldiers known as the Zouaves de Afrique into military service. The group received success and high praise, promoting military officials to task Collis with recruiting an entire regiment of Zouaves de Afrique and the 114th PVI was the result. Modeled after the elite Algerian troops, the Zouaves featured a distinctive military uniform of baggy red pants, short blue jackets, blue vests or Zouave shirts, and often a red fez. |
