George Washington Fitzgerald opens his letter to his parents by talking about the drilling he is doing. He seems to be done with the drilling and wishes for actual battle and fighting. He is bored with his regiment and wishes to see more action. He pleads with his family to write to Secretary Edwin Stanton to get the transfer approved as soon as possible. He wants to become a Zouave, and join the regiment his brother was a part of before. |

The full transcription of the letter is as follows: DC Fort Lincoln Feb [February] 18 [1864] Dear parents i received your kind and ever welcome letter and was very glad to hear from you i am well at present and hope that these few lines will find you the same their [there] aint [ain't] any thing [anything] new agoing on but plenty of drilling you want to know when my time will be out i will have to stay my 3 years out i [am] agoing to try for a transfer into 114th regt [regiment] p [Pennyslvania] v [Volunteers] for i want to see some fighting Before my time is out Bee i want you to [Page Break] write to the war department about a transfer for me and sign my name to it and i will go to the Colonels so that is the way i can get into Collis Zouaves you can direct the letter to Secertery [Secretary] Stanton and sign my name at the Bottom and my directions i must Bring my letter to a close write soon with my respects to all the family relations and friends i remain your affectionate son G. W. Fitzgerald [Page Break] so dont [don't]forget about that transfer for me you will do me a great favor by writing that for me i am a live and a [kicking] and with the devil in me as Big as Bull |
