John W. Fitzgerald begins his letter to his parents by saying that he has not received a response yet from his family. He talks again about the marching the regiment is doing and how they are going to take Richmond for General Hooker. He also apologizes for not being able to send money to his family back home. |

The full transcription of the letter is as follows: Wedensday [Wednesday] 19th/62 [1862] Nov. [November] [Warington] Virginia Dear Parants [Parents] i am waighting [waiting] very anciously [anxiously] to hear from you i have sent three letters to you and i have not received an answer yet i gess [guess] you have not got them yet or i would have heard from you i am doeing [doing] well and hope you are all well to [too] wee [we] have fine times on the march our crackers are marked 1812. wat [what] do you think of that wee [we] have to carry 3 days grub all the time wee [we] are on the march i gess [guess] wee [we] will keep it up till [until] we take Richmond fore [for] general. Hooker is a marching on to Ritchmond [Richmond] with 1.00.000 men he is i the way with the gun Boats on the James River going to wards [towards] fort darling and if the takes it hee [he] will go through and them [then] Rebbledome [Rebeldom] is ended [Page Break] times are awful hard down hear [here] you can not [cannot] get tobach [tobacco] fore [before] [lore] [more] money i tell you that wee [we] harne [have] good times hear [here] marching ever sinces [since] wee [we] left washington [Washington] and i gess [guess] wee [we] will keep on un-till [until] wee [we] get in to [into] Richmond and then wee [we] will have a good fight and then winter quarter and then wee [we] will get every thing [everything] that wee [we] want i wish wee [we] would get some money and i would send it to you right away and fel [feel] glad of the chance But the time will soon come and i will get my wishes gratified John Child has wrote to and has not got an answer yet he says he dese [does] not know wat [what] is the matter that is at Present Excuse the shorteness [shortness] give my love to all inquiring Friends [Page Break] I Remaine [Remain] your affectionate son J.
