Scope & Content |
In this letter to his parents, John W. Fitzgerald apologizes for his delayed response as he was on picket duty. He disucsses how he dissuaded Wash from becoming a soldier by treating him to the real experience of "soldiering" with marching and camp life. He also talks about a prank he pulled on his soldier friend while they were picketing. |

The full transcription of the letter is as follows: Feb [February] 15th /63 [1863] Camp near Falmouth Virginia Dear Parants [Parents] i received your ever welcome letter and was glad to hear that all are well and hope you may keep so But you must excuse me fore [for] fore [for] not writeing [writing] sooner as i was on picket fore four days and just got Back wee [we] had a gay time of it i tell you mother i doe not think that Andy yates Had any thing [anything] to do with bringing wash down hear [here] tell Pap not to blame him for it i do not think that wash will ever go Soldiering for he has learned a lesson that he never will foreget [forget] i had him all through Falmouth and on the Banks of the Rappahannock and i think he has seen a enough wee [we] had him laying in mud and water one night i wish [Page Break] i had a takeing [taken] him on a picket with mee [me] and give him more idiea [idea] of the life of a soldier Bee tell Walt that i sared [scared] garner to Death almost i told him that i seen [saw] a goast [ghost] and he would not go on Past aney [any] more the whole four days Bee ask mother if she can send mee $5.50 to pay W. Shermee i had to [forte] it to send wash home i gess [guess] in three weekes [weeks] i will send you some more i am as well as ever i will let wash to tell you his story let me know if he told you how wee would gun for [craps] i must now close withe [with] my love to all i remaine [remain] your affectionate son J.
