The 50th New York Infantry, which then became the 50th New York Engineers, was organized in Elmira, New York in September 1861. By October 1862, the unit was changed to be a regiment of engineers attached to the Army of the Potomac. This unit was also know as Stuart's Engineers; Independent Engineers; and Sappers, Miners and Potoniers. The 50th New York Engineers moved with the Army of the Potomac through its various battles like the Siege of Yorktown, the Maryland Campaign, the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Gettysburg, and the siege operations against Petersburg and Richmond. The group served as support for the army, primarily concerned with moving Union army property via waterways, constructing pontoon bridges, etc. The regiment was mustered out of service on June 13, 1865. |
