Letter from William W. Moore to his Sister Mollie Moore |
Scope & Content |
In his letter, William W. Moore thanks his sister Mollie for the box of food and goods he recently received. He was grateful to have food to share with his friends for Thanksgiving. Luckily, William was invited by some family friends to Thanksgiving dinner in Washington, which he thoroughly enjoyed. He remarks that his unit is under orders to be ready to move out at a moment's notice, as they were before. However, he does not see that happening soon. He would like to move out to help liberate the "starved prisoners" at Richmond and is anxious to help them. |

[New York] V [Volunteer] Eng [Engineers] Camp Near Navy Yard Washington D.C. November 30th 1863 My Dear Sister! [Written on the side] I am well. Send love to all. Your late welcome letter was duly received and read with gratification and pleasure. The Box of provisions arrived Satur-day Evening! I would of liked to of had you here to see me enjoy that "Lundownible Turk" after I had eaten a good square meal from it. You might of heard me Hobble by [Gobbl] for a long time it lasted so good and sweet. Therefore I ate rather more than a "government ration" A thousand thanks! "Dear Sister" for your very useful beautiful present [page break] Truly you are a dear kind sister Also the fruitcake is splendid. Although the box did not arrive as soon as anticipated, it all tasted just as good, and was enjoy-ed just as well, as though it had arrived on Thanks-giving day. I boiled some of those potatoes (for I have no means of baking) + made some Coffee, and then invited Billy + Lucius to take dinner with me. Oh I only wish that you could of seen us enjoying the dinner! We just made Mr. Turkey supper you better believe! You need not think that you were the only one of the family that were enjoying the delicacies of a fine dinner. for there was one (William by name) far away a-fighting the battles of his country. That through the hospitalities of kind Friends in Washington was also invited to a Thanks-giving dinner, which he [page break] could not very well refuse. It was giving "Cousin Julia" I enjoyed it right well. We had Oysters, Turkey, and other things to numerous to mention with no one but their own family with Mr + Mrs Philips in attendance, which made it the pleasanter for me. I have kept putting off writing this letter until I could get some clue to what is agoing to be done. We have the same orders that we had before! (about two weeks ago). and everything in readiness to start at a moments warning. I think that if we go we shall land at Aquia Creek! We will go by water! but I do not think that we will go! Although we are to [liable] to start at any moments warning. If we can help to liberate those poor-starved Prisoners at Richmond! I for one and willing + anxious to start. Well I will now close. I do not see any chance of starting this morning I will let you know when we do. I remain as your Affect. [Affectionate] Brother To Mollie M. F. MooreW. W. Moore |
