The full transcription for this letter as follows: Rappah Rapahunnaek Geneva N.Y. [New York] Sept 12th 1863 Brother Willie: Your late welcome letter was duly received and read with gratification + pleasure. I am glad you are so brave spirits + patient I believe your fortunes will better before long. Since I wrote you before I recd [received] the letter of recommendation. I alluded to from Genl [General] Stuart and forwarded to you Col [Colonel] Pettus + wrote also a letter to him stating my claims + your promised promotion - He replied very kindly + speaks of you flatteringly + says you are a good boy + he would like to give you a better position. he states that you are unfortunate in being in a Co. [Company]. that has had very few chances of promotions + that 2 or 3 are now recommended for positions that cannot be given, although old members + those who have proven courage "under fire", that Col [Colonel] S - & Capt [Captain] Smalley now had recommended you + he had not had you on his list or he would have tried to have given you a chance. as [itn] Co. [Company] has no vacancies +c - chances seen hard for promotions - but he promises that you shall have a chance when circumstances allow + that would occur when the Co. [Company] of Regt [Regiment] was filled up by the "Conscripts." these I [page break] fear now will be few + very [maintain] The Conscription has been worse than a farce & a grossly foolish man. - A [?] failure noble New York always has filled her share of volunteers + would on the last call. if proper measures had been adopted then dont [don't] want to be driven from homes & families who could be induced to volunteer. besides the law is a tyrannical illegal measure that rests unequally the rich + poor-. I hope soon you can get a [position] + that better times will smile upon you - I believe Father + Mother intend to visit you as soon as the fall work is out of the way - say next month - I will then perhaps write another letter to the Col [Colonel] + Father can see the Col. [Colonel] personally + aid your case. All are well in our family: Aunt [Harriet] or [by] Mille Whitnys wife will hand this to you + I hope you will have a good visit - Thanks for the glorious victories we are now having. God protect our noble soldiers! Perhaps you had better see Capt [Captain] Smally + get him to give you a letter of recommendation + tell him I asked it for you. With best wishes + prayers for you + with kind remmemberences to [cy] [William] and Lucius I am in haste. Your affectionate brother To W W Moore Eg [engineer] A H Moore |
