In January 1863, President Abraham Lincoln appointed Joseph Hooker to command the Army of the Potomac for his aggressive fighting tactics. He led the Army during the Battle of Chancellorsville which resulted in a Union retreat. He offered his resignation later that summer and went on to serve in the Western Theater for the remainder of the American Civil War. He was awarded The Union League of Philadelphia Silver Medal in 1864. |
