George Gordon Meade was born in Spain, where his father was an agent for the United States Navy during the War of 1812. He graduated from West Point in 1834 with a degree in engineering. He surveyed the Atlantic coast and the Great Lakes region. He was commander of the Army of the Potomac from the Battles of Gettysburg (1863) to Appomattox (1865). He was considered cantankerous by his peers, earning the nickname "Old Snapping Turtle." Major General Meade was awarded The Union League of Philadelphia Silver Medal in 1863 and The Union League of Philadelphia Gold Medal in 1866. |
