Title |
Letter from Will Moore to his Mother |
Scope & Content |
Will Moore writes two letters home to his mother. On March 19, he remarks that he briefly saw Hugh. Time is moving very slowly for him because his enlistment is up in a few months. Will ends up finishing his letter on March 21 because he attended a nearby concert at an engineer house. He wrote about the splendid pine house where General Meade's daughter was recently married. He assures his mother that he is not sleeping in the mud; their tents have raised beds. He states he does not feel much like writing that night, and askes to be excused, closing with his love to all. |

The full transcription for this letter is below: March 19th 1865 Dear Mother I did not receive your letter till [until] to day [today], was very glad to hear from you. Hugh was over to see me, came last night and returned to day [today]. I was very glad to see him, but sorry that he could not stay longer. We are having splendid weather now. I am afraid we will be on the march soon. we have such a nice place here that I hate to leave it, I am glad to hear that you are getting along so well, I was afraid that it was not so well, and felt like blaming myself. Time is slowly (to me) dragging along it will [page break] not be long now I trust till [until] I will be at home, the more I think about it the longer the time seems, but I can not help thinking at the close of each day, "one more day near home." March 21st 1865 I could not finish my letter day before yesterday. Last night I received an invitation to attend a sort of concert in an Eng-ineer regiment near here. and as I hade [had] heard a great talk of them, as being good I went. They have a splendid house. built entirely of pine. they [presented] it yesterday to the this county in Virginia for a church. Genl [General] Meade's daughter was married here a few days ago, It is raining terribly here at to night [tonight]. the rain [page break] [beats] thro [through] the canvas a little. You spoke in a [former] letter that you were afraid that we had to lay out in the mud, but such is not the case in winter quart-ers, we have good tents. the beds raised from the ground, so you see we live quite comfort-able. You asked me some time [sometime] ago if I knew any thing [anything] of [Thos] Smallwood, I have not been able to learn of his whereabouts. he is not in the Regt. [Regiment]. I do not often get up to the Regt [Regiment] now, but when I do I will try and find out if they know any thing [anything] about him, some how [somehow] I do not feel much like writing to night [tonight] so you must excuse my letter, so love to all the dears ones at home, and a kind good night. Your affectionate Son Will. |
