Robert E. Lee was the head of the Confederate army during the American Civil War. He had served for the United States in previous engagements, notably the Mexican-American War. He surrendered to U.S. General Grant at the Surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865 which is seen as the end of the Civil War and marked Union victory. |
