Description |
Portrait of Ulysses Simpson Grant (1822-1885) after a photograph by Frederick Gutekunst. The general, who is dressed in uniform and looks directly at the viewer, strikes a Napoleonic pose appropriate for a victorious military figures, with his left hand tucked into his waistcoat and his right hand in his pocket. The artist embellished the background with a marble column draped with a red curtain. |

Notes |
In the original photograph, taken shortly after Lincoln's death, Grant wears a mourning ribbon on his left arm. In later prints of the same photographic image, the mourning ribbon was removed. The artist based the painting on a later print of the photograph without the ribbon. Given the inscription on the plate reading "Presented by Mr. F. Gutekunst," it is probable that Gutekunst commissioned this painting based on his popular photograph of Grant specifically for presentation to the League.
