Title |
The African Slave Trade. The Secret Purpose of the Insurgents to Revive It. The Secret Purpose of the Insurgents to Revive It. No treaty stipulations against the slave trade to be entered into with the European powers. Judah P. Benjamin's intercepted instructions to L. Q. C. Lamar, styled commissioner, etc. |
Author |
Benjamin, Judah P. |
Summary |
The significance given to Benjamin's letter was greater than its contents merited. The compiler skillfully reversed its meaning, and warned that a victorious Confederacy would revive the African slave trade. Extracts from a speech by Congressman Horace Maynard, an East Tennessee Unionist, although not relevant, served as an effective indictment of Confederate aims. There are also a series of editorials from the National Intelligencer. |
