Title |
Northern Interests and Southern Independence: A Plea for United Action. |
Author |
Stille, Charles Janeway |
Summary |
Stille examined the "probable effect of Southern Independence upon some of the vital material interests of the North." His purpose was to show "how intensely practical a thing American nationality is...." His Union partisanship did not prevent him from questioning the efficacy of emancipation, although he justified the emancipation of slaves on the grounds that it might find acceptance as a military measure. The first edition, in a gray lettered wrapper, was privately printed; the second, or Union League edition, in a yellow lettered wrapper, deleted a portion of pages 42 to 44, which discussed the question of emancipation. |
