Title |
The Old Continental and the New Greenback Dollar |
Summary |
A brief summary of the history and causes of the collapse of Continental currency. Its object was to increase the acceptance of paper money, called greenbacks, by the many Northerners who viewed the Legal Tender Act of 1862 as an enemy more formidable than the rebel army. In the attempt to evaluate the differences between the old money and the new, any one of a number of UL members was qualified to prepare a favorable argument. In all likelihood it represented the combined thinking of Stephen Colwell, Henry C. Carey, and William Elder. |
