Does the Bible Sanction American Slavery? |
Author |
Smith, Goldwin |
Summary |
Smith's Biblical view of slavery was delivered as a lecture at the Manchester Athenaeum in 1863. To the vast literature that explored and exploited the Bible view of slavery, Smith offered one of the most informed war time contributions. In his effort to determine whether the "slave-owner's plea is true," Smith first examined the laws in the Book of Numbers and in Deuteronomy that discuss revenge, the right of asylum for criminals, the exercise of power by parents of children, and the social significance of polygamy. He concluded that these laws represented the evolution of social and moral justice, a concept which was expounded upon by rabbinic law. Back inside cover advertised the Golden Treasury Series; back outside cover advertised De Tocqueville's "Democracy in America": "In light of the present crisis, some of the opinions advanced by De Tocqueville upon the dangers which threaten the Union seem prophetic." |
