Union League of Philadelphia Medal of Honor |
Details |
During The Union League of Philadelphia's first year, in 1863, it created a Union League medal of honor, "to be conferred on men who were regarded as deserving well of their country." The medal was struck in both gold and silver. The first recipient of the gold medal was President Abraham Lincoln. The first recipients of the silver medals, accompanied by a letter and the freedom of the Union League, were presented to Lincoln's cabinet. Later, the medals were referred to as The Union League of Philadelphia Gold Medal and The Union League of Philadelphia Silver Medal.
