Order of United American Mechanics (OUAM) |
Details |
The OUAM was organized in Philadelphia in 1844 as a nativist organization that took anti-Catholic and anti-Immigrant stances. Later, the organization abandoned these views and became a general fraternal society. During the 19th century, the OUAM invested membership dues into real estate securities, which later became the basis for their relief efforts that took the form of disability and funerary payouts for widows of members. OUAM materials can be identified by the symbol of a raised fist holding a hammer, surrounded by square and compass. The Junior OUAM, a youth auxillary of the OUAM, still exists as of 2018. |
