The Norfolk Navy Shipyard, also called the Norfolk Navy Yard or NNSY, was established in 1767 as the Gosport Shipyard in Portsmouth, Virginia. It is located on the Elizabeth River, close to its mouth at Hampton Roads. It is the oldest and largest industrial facility under the control of the United States Navy. During the American Civil War, it changed hands many times. It was destroyed in 1862 and later rebuilt and given its current name. |
