New York City Draft Riots |
Details |
The New York City Draft Riots, also referred to as the Manhattan Riots or Draft Week, were five days of bloody and damaging riots that occurred in New York City during the American Civil War. These riots represented an outpouring of anger over a new federal draft law created by the United States to gather more soldiers. That being said, these riots also expressed violent racism as African Americans were most often the targets of the violence that occurred. The riots went from July 13 to July 16, 1863 when federal troops that had just served at the Battle of Gettysburg were sent to New York to stop the violent upheaval. |
