Battle of South Mountain (as it was called by the Union), also known as the Battle of Boonsboro Gap (as it was called by the Confederacy), was fought on September 14, 1862, during the American Civil War. The battle was fought near Boonsboro, Maryland, for the control of three passes through South Mountain: Crampton's Turner's and Fox's Gaps. It was fought between the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, commanded by General Robert E. Lee, and the Union Army of the Potomac, commanded by Major General George B. McClellan. It was a Union victory. |
