The 1st Michigan Volunteer Infantry was a Union regiment during the American Civil War. The regiment was mustered into service on May 1, 1861, for three months of service. After this duty concluded, the regiment mustered out and was immediately reorganized and mustered back in for three years' service with 960 men. The regiment saw action during the Peninsular Campaign under Major General George B. McClellan, including during the Battles of Mechanicsville, Gaines's Mills, Peach Orchard, Savage Station, Turkey Bend, White Oak Swamp, and Malvern Hill. They also saw action during the Battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. The regiment served until Confederate General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox and was mustered out on July 9, 1865. |
