William Jenkins Worth was a Brevet Major General who served in the United States Army from 1813 to 1849. He served during the War of 1812, the Second Seminole War, and the Mexican-American War. During the Mexican-American War, he was in command of the 1st Division under General Winfield Scott, nicknamed "Worth's Division." He saw action in the battles of Monterrey, Cerro Gordo, Contreras, Churubusco, Molino del Rey, Chapultepec, and the Siege of Veracruz. While in command of the Department of Texas in 1849, he died of cholera. Many locations are named in his honor, including Fort Worth, Texas. |
