Notes |
David Emanuel Twiggs was a career army officer, who served for the United States Army during the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War, and the Mexican-American War, and for the Confederate States Army in 1861. During the Mexican-American War, he saw action in the battles of Palo Alto, Resaca de la Palma, Monterrey, Cerro Gordo, Contreras, Churubusco, and Chapultepec, as well as the Siege of Veracruz. At the outbreak of the American Civil War, he was serving as commander of the Department of Texas. He surrendered his entire command to the Confederacy, and was commissioned as a general of the Confederate States Army shortly thereafter. He resigned later that year due to his poor heath, and was the oldest Confederate general to serve. |
