David Dixon Porter was a fifth generation sailor, whose great-grandfather served in the Continental Navy. His father, United States Navy Commodore David Porter, commanded the frigate Essex in the War of 1812. During the American Civil War, he contributed to the success of the Union Navy through many key battles, including through his service under Admiral David Farragut in the bombardment of the forts defending New Orleans. He achieved the rank of Admiral on August 15, 1870, the second individual ever to do so, after Admiral Farragut. He was awarded The Union League of Philadelphia Silver Medal in 1863. |
