Born in 1815, Halleck graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1839. He served in the Mexican War and was named Major General in 1861. He was Chief of Staff to General Ulysses S. Grant. Halleck excelled at administrative duties during the Civil War. Halleck was awarded The Union League of Philadelphia Silver Medal and freedom of the League house in 1863. |
