Notes |
Descendent of John Cadwalader, who served as William Penn's secretary. At age 18 he joined the First City Troop. In 1832, he was elected Captain of the Philadelphia City Grays, which trained to be a flying (mobile) artillery company, drilling in West Philadelphia. George Cadwalader maintained his involvement with the Philadelphia City Grays after he became Brigadier General of the First Brigade of the State Guards in 1842. The Philadelphia City Grays were also known as the "Cadwalader Grays" because of his involvement. In 1844 he commanded the forces that quelled the Nativist riots in Philadelphia. Served as Brigadier General in the regular U.S. Army throughout the Mexican War in campaigns from Verz Cruz to Mexico City. In November 1847, he was appointed Military Governor of Chapultepec, Mexico. He was honored with a parade upon his return to Philadelphia in May 1848. |
