Pierre Gustave Toutant-Beauregard was the first notable general of the Confederate Army. When South seceded he became the first brigadier general of the Confederacy. At the start of the war he defended Fort Sumter and later one the First Battle of Bull Run. He saved Petersburg, Virginia from being captured, which was close to the Confederate capital of Richmond. Beauregard was one of men that convinced Jefferson Davis to end the war against the Union. During the Civil War he served in at least eleven battles. The Battle of Fort Sumter, First Battle of Bull Run, Battle of Shiloh, Siege of Corinth, First Battle of Charleston Harbor, First Battle of Fort Wagner, Second Battle of Fort Wagner, Second Battle of Charleston Harbor, Second Battle of Fort Sumter, Second Battle of Petersburg, and the Battle of Bentonville. He served in the Mexican-American War as an Engineer under General Winfield Scott. He served in four battles during the Mexican-American War. The Battle of Contreras, The Battle of Churubusco, The Battle of Mexico City, and The Battle of Chapultepac. |
