Scope & Content |
Thomas D. Hazzard writes to his brother recounting his experience in the Union army stationed outside Washington, D.C. He shares that he has been promoted to Corporal. His regiment also traveled into the city and was reviewed by General George B. McClellan, General Winfield Scott, and President Abraham Lincoln. This letter included a second message sent as a post script (see 2019.029.11b). |

This letter is addressed to "Brother." All of Thomas D. Hazzard's letters are addressed to "Brother," in reference to Joseph H. Hazzard The full transcription of the letter is as follows: Camp Origon [Oregon] Washington Sept [September] 1st Dear Brother I receved [received] your letter dated Aug [August] 26th and was glad to hear from you. but was sorrey [sorry] to hear that mother did not come on to New York but as i told her she must sute [suit] her self [herself]. i receved [received] the papers that you sent me. the reason that i did not get them was. sonetimes [sometimes] the postmaster misses the wagone [wagon] then he leaves the papers untill [until] the next time he goes after the mail. the reason i had to pay fore [for] the pacage [package] that you sent me. i ame [am] not forced to pay but the driver gets 6 sents [cents] for evry thing [everything] he brings but if we dont [don't] see fit to pay it is all right [alright]. ever sence [since] our Captain left the comerssery [commissary] department we have had as good grub as a walenteer [volunteer] .can expect so that part is better now than it evry [ever] was. in your letter you told me not to get wet. that part is impossible one day last week our companey [company] was on guard and it was raining all the time and i was on the reserve and thay [they] wold [would] not [PAGE BREAK] leave us goe [go] to our tents on aney [any] acount [account] and i sat on a wood pile all the time and at night i tok [took] my oil clorth [cloth] blanket and spred [spread] it out and laid down and coverd [covered] up my self [myself] and whent [went] to sleep and some time [sometime] in the night i woke up and i was as wet as if i had laid down in a bath tub full of water. i did not know what to do as all the clothes i had was wet but the day after we come of [off] guard it cleard [cleared] up and we got our thing-s dry but have not felt aney [any] efeacts [effects] of it yet I sent mother $12 00 the other day it is 4 or 5 days agoe [ago] but have not Receved [Received] word if she got it or no i got a letter the other yesterday and she did not say if she got it or no. the way i sent was my captain tok [took] it th to the Admans [Adams] Express Comp [Company] and he brought me a Recept [Receipt] for it that after noon [afternoon] i got a letter stating mother had moved the letter was from a young lady of my acquaintins [acquaintance]. when i found mother had moved as i sent the money to the [PAGE BREAK] house so i wroat [wrote] a letter and put the Rect [Receipt] in it so she could goe [go] to the Office and get it but have not found out wherther [whether] she got it or not. Mother told me she got $150. a week from the Releff [Relief] Fund. I am in good health at present and hope this may find you and your famile [family] all in good health and Prosperity. This is Sunday this morning after the enspection [inspection] The Captain sent after the Pay roll wich [which] thay [they] have just maid [made] out and Read out the New apointments [appointments] of Noncomanissiond [Noncommissioned] Officers and after reading several he read the name of a fellow wich [which] you know Gilbert as Sergant [Sergeant] and then he read that of Thomas. Davis Hazzard as Corprole [Corporal] so you see i am getting alonge [along] a little. Our 2nd Lutenent [Lieutenant] had Resined [Resigned] and this after noone [afternoon] he leaves for Philad [Philadelphia] he is to Raise a Companey [Company] of Cavrley [Cavalry] wich [which] will make hin [him] captain yester day [yesterday] our Rigment [Regiment] whent [went] out to escort 2 other Rigments [Regiments] of our [PAGE BREAK] Brigade and after we got them in the middle of our Rigment [Regiment] we marched up to the white house and was Reveue-d [Reviewed] by General Mcleclond [McClellan] and Gen [General] Scott and the Presedent [President] Lincolon [Lincoln] evry body [everybody] hear [here] seam [seem] to think we will be cept [kept] hear [here] in the city as the Presedents [Presidents] guard and act as Provost Marchel [Marshall] guard around this city. eather [either] Tusday [Tuesday] or Whensd-ay [Wednesday] we get 2 monthes [months] pay wich [which] will be 24 or 26 Dollars. Doe [Do] send me word if i told you about my viset [visit] to the, city, i for gett [forget] wher if i sent you word or not. Things is quiret [quiet] hear [here] nothen [nothing] is talked about as no body [nobody] know-s what is a goen [going] to be don [done]. i hear that thear [there] is a battle in progress at the present momen-t over in Alexandrer [Alexandria]. but know nothing further. i must now draws to a close by sending you and your famile [family] my best Respects and the same to John Barney Hoping this may find yous [you] all in good health as i am the sane [same] at present from Your Brother Dirict [Direct] as befor [before]Thomas. Overall, letter is in good condition. This letter has three vertical fold lines, one down the center splitting the leaf in half and two less distinct fold lines on either side of the leaf. This paper also has two horizontal fold lines splitting the paper into equal thirds. There is slight discoloration along the fold lines. |
