Thomas Davis Hazzard writes to his brother informing him of his marriage to Mrs. Nellvina Hazzard from Savannah, Georgia. Hazzard says Nellvina was a "rebel", but that she supports the Union now. He also informs his brother that he has been promoted to Orderly Seargeant in his company of the hospital guard at Chestnut Hill Hospital, where he is staying due to an injury received at the Battle of Gettysburg. This new position was keeping him busy and expected to stay at the hospital through the winter. |

This letter is addressed to "Brother." All of Thomas D. Hazzard's letters are addressed to "Brother," in reference to Joseph H. Hazzard. The full transcription of the letter is as follows: U.S.A General Hospital Chestnut Hill Pa [Pennsylvania] Dear Brother Sept. 27th/ 63 After waiting for sevral [several] weeks for a letter from you. and now i th take this opptunity [opportunity] of droping [dropping] you thes [these] fue [few] lines to let you know that myself and Mrs. Nellvina. Hazzard. my wife are enjoying good health at present and we hope this may find you and your famile [family] in good health. i supose [suppose] you was suprised [surprised] to hear of me being married. but it is True. and i think i am verey [very] well suted [suited]. Nellie, is from Savanah [Savannah], Georgia. she has an Uncle in New York he is a mearchant [merchant] by the name of Walsh, all the rest of her famile [family] are in Savanah [Savannah]. She is or was a Reble [Rebel] but she is for the Union now I have been appointed Ordley [Orderly] Seargent of a company which are doing guard duty as this hospital and i think i am good for all winter hear [here] [page break] But i am cept [kept] buizey [busy]. all day but i can have from 9 oclock in the evning [evening] untill [until] 5 oclock in the morning but i cant [can't] get up from the city so early. I have not much news at present. Mother and all the folks was in good health when i was at home last. Give my Respects to John Barrey and to Ann and the children and Recive [Receive] the Best Respects of Your Brother T. D. Overall, letter is in poor condition. This sheet has three horizontal folds. One fold runs across the center of the page, and the other two are about an inch above and below the center fold. There are two subtle creases that run vertical. One about half an inch from the left edge and one about an inch from the right edge. There is discoloration along fold lines, especially on the front of the sheet. It is increasingly discolored in certain areas along the folds. There are two tears along the first and third horizontal fold lines about a half an inch long. |
