The full transcription of the letter is as follows: D. C Fort Lincoln Dec [December] 9th [1863] Dear parents i received your ever welcome letter and was very glad to hear from you. i am well and hope that these few lines will find you the same i received them gloves you sent me and am very much obliged to you for them for they just come in nice for it is as cold as the devil here i will give you a little idea of a soldiers life [Page Break] this is the way we have to do work 3 days and the rest of the week drill from 9 ½ oclock [o'clock] to 11 ocl [o'clock] Battalion drill and in the afternoon we drill one hour in artillery thats [that's] all a Soldier has to do now about the furlough that is played out for one of the men in our Company sent in for a furlough and the Colonel [disapproved] it he told him if he would reenlist he would give him a 30 day one so you know now [Page Break] i cant [can't] get one i havent [haven't] nothing more at present i must now close with my Best respects to Sis buzby Charlie harry myers Hannah Clark and all relations write soon excuse this from your affectionate Son G.
