Scope & Content |
In this letter, George Washington Fitzgerald writes to get an answering letter from his family. He has made it to Fort Lincoln and this is the first time we hear about this fort. He is having a good time with his fellow soldiers and is inquiring about whether or not his brother John is still alive because he has not heard from him. He talks about a ring he stole from a dead Rebel and writes once again to Bee. |

The full transcription of the letter is as follows: September 19th /63 [1863] dear parents I wrote a letter on the 13th but have not receive [received] any answer i am well and hope you are the same i would of wrote sooner but i was awaiting for an answer i am now with my battery it is within 4 miles of washington [Washington] we have gay times of it and a nice place to sleep in the name of our fort is fort lincoln i like place it is a fine place for soldiers our regiments time will be out in one year let me know if you have heard any thing [anything] about John and wear [where] he is if he is dead or alive tell walt to write me for i would like to have a letter from [Page Break] Bee. i have got a ring on my finger that i got from a rebel if you would like to have it let me know in the letter you write and i will send it to you i must now close with my love to all the family and inquering [inquiring] friends write soon I remain your affectionate son George W. Fitzgerald direct your letter to George W. Fitzgerald Company G 112th P. [Pennsylvania] V. [Volunteers] fort lincoln Washington D C [Page Break] send me some paper and envelopes for i am [played] out of them |
