Title |
Letter from Will Moore to his Mother |
Scope & Content |
Will Moore writes that he has left Petersburg, passed near Appomattox Court House, and is now in Danville, Virginia. He is very upset that he has not received a letter from home in over a month writing that other soldiers have received letters home, guilting his mother. He wonders if anything happened at home, and states that he was so disappointed that he did not care if he never heard from home again, but quickly retracted that statement. He writes that Danville is a pretty place, and he is very busy with all the sick at the Division Hospital. |

The full transcription for this letter is below: Danville Va [Virginia] April 30th 1865 Dear Mother, This is the first oppertunity [opportunity] I have had to write to you since I wrote from near Appomattox Court House. I have not heard from you since we left Petersburg, I have almost given up ever hearing from you. It is now a month since I have had a letter, we have had several mails since that time others have received letters but I was disappointed, why is it, am I forgotten, or has any thing [anything] happened at home. We have had a hard time since leaving Petersburg, others have been cheered by kind letters from home, not so with me, but perhaps you [page break] have written and your letters not reached me. As I have often told you, I am often so [situated] that it is impossible for me to write; but rest assured if you do not hear from me for any length of time that I am well. If any thing [anything] happened me, and if I could not write, others would for me. I have thought when I saw others all round me getting letters from home every week, that I did not care if I never heard from home again, but I know that was wrong and was sorry for it, I have thought and still think much of you and home, and am anxiously waiting for the happy time when I will get there. Danville is quite a pretty place, but I was rather disappointed, I expected to see a much larger place. We are encamped on one edge of the town. I do not know how long we will remain here. There is nothing but our Corps here. I am still at Div [Division] Hospital, we have a large number of sick, and I am kept pretty busey [busy]. I send a paper published by our Corps in this town, please give it to Joe Hoping to hear from you soon I remain your affectionate Son, Will PS Have you heard from Hugh lately. |
