Scope & Content |
Serving in the Union Army, Thomas Davis Hazzard writes to his brother and tells him of his involvement in what was probably the Battle of Chancellorsville. His brigade was led by General Benham. During an engagement with Confederate troops, one of the sergeants from his regiment led a charge and lost his thumb in the effort. Hazzard closes his letter by asking his brother's opinion on General George Stoneman's raid of Richmond, VA. |

This letter is addressed to "Brother." All of Thomas D. Hazzard's letters are addressed to "Brother," in reference to Joseph H. Hazzard. The full transcription of the letter is as follows: ocupying [occupying] Head Quarters Co. [Company] "B." 71st P [Pennsylvania] V [Volunteers] Camp Near Falmouth Va [Virginia] May 11th 1863 Dear Brother I recived [received] your longe [long] looked for letter yestday [yesterday] i was glad to hear from you and to hear you was all well. by this time you have heard all about our defeat hear [here] it is bad and our loss is i guss [guess] at least 50 thousand. Our Brigade was detached to lay the pontoons and to suport [support] 75 cannons which coverd [covered] us while at work we was under comand [command] of General Brengham [Benham]. but we had 5 generals and 7 conerals [colonels] over us and for 7 days and nights did we have to be pulling boats and on the watch for Rebles [Rebels]-one of our sergents [sergeants] of Co [Company] B vulenteer-d [volunteered] to charge the hights [heights] and in doing so he had his thumb shott [shot] off. he was the only one of the Brigade which got hurt this ti time [page break] We have mooved [moved] our camp upon a hill i dont [don't] know how longe [long] we will stop hear [here]. some say we will stay all sumer [summer] and then we hear of a moove [move] right away-So things is at present- I recived [received] a letter form mother the same time i got yours thay [they] was all well then. Overall, letter is in good condition. This sheet has one vertical fold that splits the page directly in half. It has two horizontal folds that split it into equal thirds. There is discoloration is along the fold lines. The front has some discoloration along the edges of the page. There is about an inch long tear at the top of the center vertical fold. This sheet as a slight warp as if it was once rolled up. |
