Scope & Content |
In this letter, Thomas Davis Hazzard informs his brother of his new appointment to the U. S. Army regulars and his new regiment. He is now a corporal within the 144 Company 1st Battalion Invalid Corps of the United States Army. He explains the new duties that come along with this new placement and that he will be moving to a barracks in Washington, D.C. He will also get a raise since he is now a corporal and earn seventeen dollars a month. In a postscript, Hazzard tells his brother about military schooling he is receiving. |

This letter is addressed to "Brother." All of Thomas D. Hazzard's letters are addressed to "Brother," in reference to Joseph H. Hazzard. The full transcription of the letter is as follows: Head. Quarters. 144 Co [Company] 1st Bat [Battalion] I.C [Invalid Corps] Washington, D.C. Dear Brother Dec. [December] 19th 1863 I now sit down to drop you thes [these] fue [few] lines. hoping thay [they] may find you and your famile [family] all in good helth [health]. as it leaves me in good health at present. I now beloing [belong] to the 144 Co. [Company] 1st Battalion I. C. [Invalid Corps] and now i am an reagler [regular] U. S. Soldier. and am under the strictes [strictest] milletary [military] Dissiplin [Discipline]. We are difrent [different] from all other Invlads [Invalids], for we have reglar [regular] officers in command of us and we have to come to stile [style] with clean clothes bright brasses and clean baotons [buttons], and polished boots and hair cut short. and faces shaved close and we have to ware [wear] a lether [leather] stalk and have to salute evry [every] superior officer, and Sergents [Sergeants] and Corprols [Corporals] have more respect [page break] showen [shown] to them by the men hear [here], than a Col. [Colonel] dos [does] in the volenteer [volunteer] servis [service]. To morrow [Tomorrow] Sunday General Beaufort [Buford] is to be buried and we are orded [ordered] out as an escort so i supose [suppose] we will have to put on airs. This morning i sent a letter to Mother. i have not heard from her for 2 or 3 weeks at that time all was in good health. I recived [received] a letter from Nellvenia. Yesterday she was in good health and head been to see mother and she said that mother was in good health. We are quarted [quartered] in Barraks [Barracks] on Mreidan [Meridian] Hill now but on Monday we go into New. Barraks [Barracks] which was built for us in Washington, D. C. Thear [There] is 3 companys [companies] [page break] of on duty at the U.S. Armery [Armory] for a while, and about the time the draft take place, our Regt [Regiment] which is eather [either] 10 or 11, are to come to New York City. Then i will have a chance to see you i hope. Just look at this. Corp. [Corporal] T. D. Hazzard. 144 Co [Company] 1st Battalion I. C. [Invalid Corps] U.S.A [United States Army] dont [don't] you think i am getting my name up in the world. The Goverment [Government] have raised the pay now that my time is nearly out. Prvts. [Privates] 16. Corps. [Corporals] 17. Sergt [Sergeants] 19. and Ordlry [Orderly] Sergts. [Sergeants] 23. Dollars amonth [a month] and the clothes have come down the pay begins from Dec 1st 1863 Give my Respects to John Barray [Barrey], and to Ann and the children and Recive [Receive] the same Your Self. I remain Your. Brother Thomas. D. Hazzard I. C. [Invalid Corps] U.S.A [United States Army] [page break] P.S. write scoon [soon] and Direct to Corp. [Corporal] T. D. Hazzard 144 Co 1st Battalion. I.C. It is verey [very] cold hear [here] and thear [there] is verey [very] thick ice, but that dont [don't] stop us from drills for we drill twice a day and have a dress praid [parade], and have Five. 5 Roll calls evry [every] Day and the noncommishend [noncommissioned] officers have a school evry [every] night when we study the rules and Reaglations [Regulations] and articles of war and the book of tackticks [tactics] and i tell you a fellow has to be sharp or thay [they] will give him fits. Thay [they] dont say whear [where] thay [they] will open the books so we have to study all of it for we have to come over it without a book. So you can forme [form] an idear [idea] of our school TDH. Nellie sends her Respects to you and Ann. |

Overall, letter is in fair condition. This sheet has one vertical fold down its center. It has two horizontal folds splitting it into equal thirds. There is discoloration along the fold lines and edges, especially on the front of the page. There are also smears of discoloration throughout the front page. |
