Scope & Content |
Thomas Davis Hazzard writes a letter to his brother asking him to respond to the letters he has sent. This is the fourth letter Hazzard sent to his brother without reply. While a large portion of this letter is missing, in the pieces that remain Hazzard informs his brother of his duties as acting post Quarter Master. He ends his letter with a poem about his service in the war coming to an end and heading home to Philadelphia. |

This letter is addressed to "Brother." All of Thomas D. Hazzard's letters are addressed to "Brother," in reference to Joseph H. Hazzard. The full transcription of the letter is as follows: Kendall. Green. Barracks Washington. D.C. Dear Brother, Feb [February] 2nd/64 I have writing [written] 3 letters and i have not recived [received] a [an] answer to aney [any] of them from you. now i will try this the fourth one. I am at present enjoying good health. and i hope … you and your famile [family]… Nellie for about 10 days, now but think she is well. I hope you have plenty of work and that you are making money. I wish you would write and let me know how you are getting along and how maney [many] new [page break] you have at work and if you have as much as you can do- I have plenty to keep me onn [on] the goe [go] from day brake [break] untill [until] after dark evry [every] day as i am acting post, Quarter Master, and have to attend to evry [every] thing that is wanted at this post.- The last i heard from William he had… House-thay [they] print and bind all kinds of goverment [government] work in this building and thear [there] is about 16 or 18 Hundred men and girls enployed [employed] in it so you can form some iedear [idea] of the building - [page break] I will have to close by Sending My Best Respects to Ann and to the children and hope you will Recive [Receive] the same your self [yourself] I Remain Your Brother Thomas D. Overall, letter is in poor condition. This sheet has one vertical fold down its center, and two more splitting the page into equal fourths. It has two horizontal folds splitting it into equal thirds. There is discoloration along the fold lines and edges. This sheet is missing a large section from its right side. This missing section runs from the central vertical fold to the edge of the page and encompasses most of the middle of the right side of the sheet. There is a small hole in the sheet just above the missing section and another mirrored on the left side of the page. |
