The full transcription of the letter is as follows: Oct [October] 28th 1863 Dear parents i received your ever welcome letter and was sourow [sorry] to here [hear] that pap and mother were sick i am well and uncle Sam and i agree first straight i would of have answer it sooner only i was out on picket on the railroad and it was as cold as the devil and was not allowed any firer [fire] so you may judge for yourself how it was i received a letter from amanda and was glad to hear from her she says harry was much disappointed because he did not see me when i was on their [there] we was inspected by major general auger [Auger] we will be mustered in for pay a Sat-urday tell walt i just as well receive [received] a letter from without money as well as [Page Break] it was tell him to write give my best respects to Hary Mcmim Charley Hannah Clarh and sis Buzby i must now close with my best respect to all the family and inquiring friends i remain your affectionate Son G. W. Fitzgerald Write soon |
